Part of the fun of genealogy
for me is to imagine what the lives of our ancestors were like. What did they talk about over the dinner table,
which national figures inspired or infuriated them, what was going on in the world around them?
The following timeline was original published in the Rutland, Vermont County Independent on January 5, 1867 and contained mostly
information about the settlement and establishment of the states. To the original list, I have
added some family-related events and a few more pertinent historical events to those that the County Independent newspaper
recorded on that day.
- 1607, Albert Andriessen Bradt born in Frederikstad, Smaalenenes (Now Ostfold), Norway
- 1607, Virginia settled by the English
- 1609, Henry Hudson sails up the Hudson river just beyond present-day Albany
- 1614, New York first settled by the Dutch
- 1620, Massachusetts settled by the Puritans
- 1623, New Hampshire settled by the Puritans
- 1624, New Jersey settled by the Dutch
- 1625, Delaware settled by the Swedes
- 1635, Maryland settled by Irish Catholics
- 1636, Storm Albertse van der Zee born on ship Rensselaerswyck, November 2nd
- 1636, Rhode Island settled by Roger Williams
- 1650, North Carolina settled by the English
- 1653, Jan Jurriaensen Becker arrives in New Amsterdam on the ship "Solomon" in 1653
- 1654?, Robert Burditt moves his family from England to Malden, Massachusetts
- 1670, South Carolina settled by the Huguenots
- 1679, Jan Clute and family lived in Albany
- 1692, Pennsylvania settled by William Penn
- 1733, Georgia settled by Gen. Oglethorpe
- 1760, John Solomon Koenig (King) emigrated to Pennsylvania from Europe.
- 1766, Thomas Burditt moves his family from Malden to Lancaster, Massachusetts
- 1775, The Revolutionary War breaks out with the Battle of Lexington and Concord
- 1783, The Revolutionary War ends with the signing of the Treaty of Paris
- 1791, Vermont admitted into Union
- 1792, Kentucky admitted into Union
- 1795, Third Partition of the Kingdom of Poland among Austria, Germany and Russia, which would last until after WWI.
- 1796, Tennessee admitted into Union
- 1802, Ohio admitted into Union
- 1803, President Thomas Jefferson purchases Lousiana Territory from France
- 1804, Storm A.L. Becker, age 29, dies and leaves wife Elisabeth Clute with 4 young boys
- 1811, Louisiana admitted into Union
- 1816, Indiana admitted into the Union
- 1817, Mississippi admitted into the union
- 1818, Illinois admitted into the Union
- 1819, Alabama admitted into the Union
- 1820, Maine admitted into the Union
- 1821, Missouri admitted into the Union
- 1825, Erie Canal completed, allowing travel from the Hudson River to Lake Erie
- 1826, Christian Koenig (King) moves his family to Wooster, Ohio
- 1835, Samuel Koenig (King) moves his family from Ohio to Marion County, Illinois
- 1836, Arkansas admitted into the Union
- 1845, Florida admitted into the Union
- 1843, Samuel Koenig (King) moves his family from Marion County to Tazewell County, Illinois
- 1846, Iowa admitted into the Union
- 1846, Mexican-American War broke out
- 1847, Lemuel Churchill moves his family from Rutland, Vermont to Mokena, Illinois
- 1848, Wisconsin admitted into the Union
- 1848, Jozef Wrobel born in Poland
- 1849, Storm Clute Becker born (parents - Grandus and Elisabeth Clute Becker)
- 1850, California admitted into the Union
- 1853?, Thomas Beagley moves his family from Wisbech, England to Orland Township, Illinois
- 1858, Grandus Becker moves his family from Stillwater, New York to Kenosha, Wisconsin
- 1864, Union soldier Orson Churchill dies in a hospital at Nashville, Tennessee
- 1870, Frederick Mohr emigrates from Germany to Orland Park, Illinois
- 1871, Four of Samuel King's grandchildren die in an epidemic in Waldo Township, Livingston County, Illinois
- 1878, Storm Clute Becker, age 29, dies from diphtheria and leaves wife Cassie van Patten with 2 young children
- 1902, Jan Wrobel, age 16, arrives at Ellis Island from Gron, Poland
